So much so that for good doers, we would recommend Baillie Haylage High Fibre as the additional fibre content will encourage them to take more time over their forage.
Baillie Haylage Meadow Grass is a medium to low energy haylage, lower in sugar, protein and energy (calories) and is suitable for leisure horses and ponies, native breeds, veterans, those in on rest or light work, and animals on low-input diets.
Cut at the close of the season, the Meadow Grass is only available in the large and handy bale sizes.
Like the High Fibre and Meadow Grass, it is lower in sugar and energy (calories) compared to the Ryegrass and Ryegrass and Timothy varieties. Softer than the High Fibre, but with more stem than the Meadow Grass, this variety is a popular choice for the pickiest of eaters. Horses and ponies like to graze on the product, which has a distinctive herby smell and a very high dry matter content, by selecting the different types of grasses as they go – making it great for keeping haynets interesting!
Cut when the seed heads are fully developed, Baillie Haylage Traditional Parkland Meadow is suitable for all types of horses and ponies, including good doers, older hoses, convalescents, natives, those in light work or at rest and some laminitics.
With more stem than our other lower energy forages (Traditional Parkland Meadow and Meadow Grass), the Baillie Haylage High Fibre is an excellent all-round forage. Cut later in the season from second and third year leys, this late heading perennial ryegrass is a versatile forage suitable for most, including:
- Horses and ponies at rest or in light to medium work
- Competition horses; many of our professional customers like to feed Baillie Haylage High Fibre as a quality forage and supplement the energy requirements with hard feed.
- Good doers
- Broodmares
- Native breeds
- Some laminitics
It is essential that horses and ponies digest the appropriate amount of fibre according to their size, workload and living conditions to maintain good gut health. Feeding Baillie Haylage High Fibre is an excellent way to maintain a horse’s natural grazing behaviour by trickling fibre into a horse’s diet and can help to reduce the reliance on hard feed.
